International subscribers fuelling Netflix’s growth

International subscribers are consuming a growing portion of online streaming platform Netflix’s content, according to research from The Diffusion Group.

The group’s research shows a large increase in the amount of Netflix streaming hours coming from international subscribers.

In the third quarter of 2011, 94% of streaming hours were coming from US subscribers, but fast forward to the second quarter of 2014 and the US contribution dropped to 72%.

The trend is expected to continue thanks to the company’s recent expansion into Germany and France.

Netflix has confirmed that it’s planning to launch in Australia, although it’s not yet clear exactly when that will be.

The report from The Diffusion Group also found Netflix subscribers around the world watch an average of 93 minutes of content per day, and consumer 45 gigabytes of data every month.

The total number of hours watched is growing rapidly. In the final quarter of 2012 Netflix said its subscribers had watched a total of two billion hours’ worth of content. In the second quarter of 2014, that number had grown to seven billion hours.
