Google has partnered with American bookseller Barnes & Noble to take on Amazon in the online book retail space, reports The New York Times.
It’s an industry that’s long been dominated by Amazon, but this week book buyers in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco will be able to get same-day deliveries for books purchases from local Barnes & Noble stores, through Google’s online shopping and delivery service Google Shopping Express.
Barnes & Noble’s bricks-and-mortar business remains stagnant and the bookseller’s forays into the digital space have so far failed to live up to expectations. The company has closed 63 retail stores in the last five years.
Barnes & Noble’s chief executive Michael Huseby told The New York Times the partnership was a test.
He hopes it is a way the company can increase its online reach while also improving sales from its physical stores.
