Amazon has asked the Federal Aviation Administration for exemption from rules that bar it from testing drones in the United States.
Last year Amazon showed off small delivery drones that it says can deliver its parcels to consumers in 30 minutes as part of what the retail giant is calling its Prime Air service.
In a letter to the FAA, Amazon vice president global public policy Paul Misener said the company is committed to making Prime Air available to customers worldwide “as soon as we are permitted to do so”.
Misener said Amazon has made advancements over the past five months in the development of the drones, which can travel 80kph, carry five pound payloads and cover 86% of products sold on Amazon.
“One day, seeing Amazon Prime Air will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today, resulting in enormous benefits for consumers across the nation,” said Misener.
