Aaron Sorkin, the Hollywood creator and writer of such television shows and films as The West Wing and A Few Good Men, is set to write a film based on the origins of social networking site Facebook.

Facebook representatives say that the site, which now boasts over 100 million users, is not involved in the project and has not made any arrangements with Sorkin.

Sorkin has started a group on the site as part of his research for the film, which he says is being used for research.

Harvard Alumni magazine 02138 says the film may centre around the controversy around the site’s creation, as former Harvard student Aaron Greenspan alleges in his book Authoritas that founder Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea from him in 2004.

Facebook spokeswoman Brandee Barker told the Los Angeles Times: “We are routinely approached by writers and filmmakers interested in telling the Facebook story or the stories of the more than 100 million people who use Facebook to share and make the world more open and connected. At this point, we have not agreed to cooperate with any film project, but we are flattered by the interest.”
