Apple working on smaller, cheaper iPhone, report claims

Apple is working on a new iPhone that is about one-third the size of the current iPhone 4 and will only cost about $US200, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

According to “people who have been briefed on the plans”, Apple is investigating a version of the iPhone that would also make it easier to use on multiple wireless networks.

The report claims chief executive Steve Jobs wants to narrow out the price gap that is making Android phones more affordable and popular that iPhones, which are typically much more expensive – especially in the United States.

One plan could see Apple sell the gadget for $US200 without making users sign up for a contract.

However, the report also says that while the gadget could be launched in mid-2012, the entire project could still be canned.
