Skype traffic continues to increase

VoIP service Skype has continued to increase its share of international voice traffic, new figures from research firm TeleGeogrpahy reveal.

The company has found over the past 25 years, international call volumes from telephones have grown at a compounded annual rate of 51%, but this has slowed to just 8% in the last two years.

However, Skype international traffic between two users has grown by 51% in 2008, and is expected to grow by 63% in 2009. TeleGeogrpahy analyst Stephan Beckert told Reuters the result was surprising.

“Skype is now the largest provider of cross border communications in the world, by far… The volume of traffic routed via Skype is tremendous.”

Skype hopes to increase revenue to $1 billion within the next few years.
