A new Macintosh compatible version of Google web browser Chrome will be available within months, the company said at the launch of its Chrome web browser version 3.0.
The Macintosh version of Chrome, now in testing, will be released before the end of the year, Google product management vice president Sundar Pichai says.
PC-compatible Version 3.0, released on Tuesday, adds faster performance and “themes” that allow users to customise how the browser looks. It is a significant part of Google’s strategy to tempt users to switch from Microsoft systems.
“If at the two-year birthday we’re not at least 5% (market share), I will be exceptionally disappointed. And if at the three year birthday we’re not at 10% I will be exceptionally disappointed,” Chrome engineering director Linus Upson says.
Google, which entered the browser market one year ago, currently holds a 3.5% market share, PC World reports. In comparison, Microsoft’s share is 58%.
