A new broadband cable connecting Sydney to Guam could help slash internet prices by up to 50%.
The new cable, built and set in place by Pipe Networks, stretches over 4,700 kilometres and connects several major countries in the Pacific.
The cable is the first of its kind to be owned independently of any of the connected country’s telecommunications groups.
Grahame Lynch, publisher of website CommsDay, told news.com.au that broadband prices will fall, and download quotas offered by telcos will increase.
“Prices will drop dramatically,” he said. “It’s going to have a tremendous impact on what users will be able to enjoy in terms of quotas,” he said.
iiNet managing director Michael Malone told The Australian that the group would increase download quotas for its customers by up to 15%.
