Google created a flurry of excitement when it launched its “Street View” application, but has now ventured under the surface to deliver “Ocean in Google Earth”. The new application allows users to “dive beneath the water surface, explore 3D underwater terrain and browse ocean-related content contributed by marine scientists,” a Google statement says.
The latest version of the Google Earth software now lets users travel through kilometres of underwater territory, by using 20 different layers of content provided by explorers and scientists.
The new software will also allow users to view photos and videos of oceanic “hot spots”, and track animals that have been tagged via satellite.
“Oceans cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface but only a little bit has been explored,” Florence Diss, head of Google’s geographical partnerships, told zdnet.com.au. Google hopes that by allowing users to explore the ocean, everyday users will connect with the scientific community.
