NBN rollout: Copper phone line services set to be shut off in parts of Tasmania next week, SMEs warned

The NBN Co is urging businesses in a number of Tasmanian towns to switch their copper phone services to the national broadband network or face disconnection next week.

Next Friday, May 23, copper phone services will be shut down in the Tasmanian towns of Deloraine, George Town, Kingston Beach, St Helens, Sorell, and Triabunna.

In addition, the copper phone network will be closed in Hobart beginning September 29, while services in Midway Point, Scottsdale and Smithton will be discontinued October 23.

The company has posted maps of affected areas on its official website.

SMEs using an EFTPOS terminal, fax or alarm system are asked to contact the provider of that service (for example, their security company for an alarm) in order to find out which NBN services support their device.

Meanwhile, building owners with an emergency lift phone or fire indicator panel are asked to register it with the NBN Co on 1800 687 626 ahead of the transition.

Business owners in the affected areas should also contact their internet service provider to discuss their options.

NBN Co chief customer officer John Simon said as long as an NBN order has been placed by a business before the scheduled disconnection date, they won’t be disconnected.

“The move to the NBN is not automatic. Homes and business owners who want to keep using these services must place an order with their preferred phone company or internet service provider as soon as possible,” Simon said in a statement.
