MWC 2014: Sony announces new flagship smartphone, tablet and wearable device

Sony has announced a major refresh of its product line at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, including a new flagship smartphone called the Xperia Z2, the Z2 Tablet and the SmartBand SWR10.

The Xperia Z2 is a 4G Android 4.4 KitKat smartphone powered by a 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor.

As with its predecessors, the smartphone is both dust-protected and waterproof.

It also comes with 3 gigabytes of RAM, up to 16 gigabytes of storage, expandable through a microSD slot, as well as a large 3000 mAh battery.

It features a 5.2-inch full HD display measuring at 1920 by 1080 pixels, as well as a 20.7-megapixel camera capable of 4k video capture.

In a statement, Sony claims the device features the most advanced camera ever used in a waterproof smartphone.

“With new enhanced video mode, you can now capture memories in stunning detail in 4K resolution (3840×2160 pixels/30p) at four times the detail of Full HD, delivering the world’s best camera and camcorder in a waterproof smartphone. Plus, SteadyShot image stabilisation technology ensures your footage will stay smooth even if you are walking.

“The new Movie Creator [app] allows you to trim and crop your videos so that you can easily pick out what you want to share.”

Alongside its new smartphone, the company released a new 10.1-inch tablet, called the Z2 Tablet, which also runs Android 4.4 KitKat.

The device, measuring 172 x 266 x 6.4 mm and weighing 439 grams, is being positioned as the lightest waterproof tablet ever made.

The tablet is powered by a Qualcomm 2.3 GHz quad-core processor and includes an 8.1-megapixel rear camera.

Alongside the new smartphone and tablet, Sony has also released a wearable smart wristband, called the SmartBand, that communicates with the XPeria Z2 over NFC (near-field communications) or Bluetooth through a new app called Lifelog.

“Sony’s innovative new Lifelog application binds the SmartWear Experience together, enabling you to discover your past, enjoy your present and helping inspire your future,” Sony says in a statement.

“Together with SmartBand, the Android app enables you to effortlessly capture life and entertainment – places visited, music listened to, games played, books read – and presents it a beautifully visual interface.”
