Microsoft unveils “thinner than Air” 12-inch Surface Pro 3, Australian release by the end of August

Microsoft has unveiled its latest tablet, the Surface Pro 3, with the tech giant claiming the latest version of the device is 30% thinner than an 11-inch MacBook Air.

The device will be available in a range of specifications, including with Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processors, with 4 or 8 gigabytes of RAM and between 64 and 512 gigabytes of storage.

It features a 12-inch ClearType Full HD screen with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels, as well as a 10% improvement in battery life over its predecessor.

As with its predecessors, the device will offer a kickstand, keyboard cover and a digitiser pen, with a range of accessories including a docking station and Ethernet adaptor also planned.

The tablet is powered by Windows 8.1 Pro, meaning it is fully compatible with desktop PC apps, with Microsoft promising a range of software including an update to PhotoShop that will take advantage of the digitiser pen.

Microsoft says the new device will be released through selected retailers in the US today, with an Australian release promised by the end of August.

The device will carry a starting price in the US of $US799, although it is unclear what the Australian price for the device will be.
