Google Glass gets limited public release on April 15 – but Australians miss out again

Google has announced a limited release of its Google Glass augmented reality glasses in the US next week – but Australians will miss out yet again.

In a post on the official Google+ page for Google Glass, the tech giant announced that it will make a limited number of spots in Google Glass Explorer program available to US citizens.

While Google has previously made a limited number of spots in the program available to the general public, until now the glasses have mostly been made available to developers

Users will be able to sign up a 6AM on April 15^th to members of the general public, with a spot costing users $1500 plus tax.

Successful applicants will also be able to nominate for a pair of Google’s Titanium Collection frame designs, which were unveiled by the company in January.

In the post, Google stresses the objective is to trial a new way to find volunteers for the Explorer program rather than releasing the device to the public.

“Over the past several months, we’ve been trying out different ways to expand the Explorer program. Some of you signed up at Google I/O, some told us what you would do #ifihadglass , some were referred by a friend, some joined through their school or university.

“Our Explorers are moms, bakers, surgeons, rockers, and each new Explorer has brought a new perspective that is making Glass better.

“But every day we get requests from those of you who haven’t found a way into the program yet, and we want your feedback too. So in typical Explorer Program fashion, we’re trying something new.”

The release comes after Google issued a statement tackling 10 of the biggest myths associated with the glasses last month.
