A wide range of military technology has found its way on to online auction sites such as eBay and Craiglist, a US government investigator has found.
FCW.com reports that the investigation revealed military gear including components of an F-14 jet, military issue night-vision goggles, body armour vests and a US military uniform available for purchase online.
The US Government Accountability Office, which conducted the investigation, believes much of the hardware was stolen from military bases or manufacturers. In many cases the vendors of the items were former military personnel.
Both Craigslist and eBay prohibit the sale of stolen items, and eBay bans the sale of sensitive military items, but the report reveals the difficulty of regulating the online retail environment.
