Social networking site Twitter has turned to television advertising, after figures revealed that only 15% of American internet users have an account on the social network.
According to English newspaper The Telegraph, seven television advertisements for the social network were shown during the Pocono 400 NASCAR race in Pennsylvania.
The news comes after a recent Pew Internet and American Life Project study found that 15% of internet users in the US use the Twitter social network, with only 8% using the service on a typical day.
With competitor Facebook recording 158 million unique visitors per month in the US according to ComScore, or about 71% of US internet users, Twitter remains significantly behind its largest social networking competitor in the US market.
