Twitter suffers largest outage in eight months

Twitter has suffered its biggest outage in over eight months, with the service shutting down for about an hour last night.

It’s been some time since Twitter suffered a massive outage. During the company’s early days, the failed connection screen featuring the so-called “fail whale” was a common sight, but as the service has grown outages have become less common.

The last Twitter outages occurred in December 2011. The company said last night’s outage was caused by “a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components”.

However, despite last night’s bug, the company has maintained a consistent uptime over the past year. According to tracking site Pingdom, the site has recorded a 99% uptime.
