Melbourne’s Chadstone shopping centre has topped the Shopping Centre News Big Guns list this year, with a turnover of $1 billion.
The annual Shopping Centre News survey ranked Australian shopping centres according to moving annual turnover for the 2007 financial year. Turnover at the top 20 shopping centres rose more than 7% to $13.5 billion.
Nearly all of the 80 centres in the survey recorded turnover growth that kept pace with or exceeded inflation.
Sydney’s Westfield Bondi Junction was second on the list, with a turnover of $900 million – an increase of 9.1% on the previous year.
Warringah Mall, also in Sydney, had turnover of $767.8 million, ranking it third. Westfield Chermside in Brisbane increased its turnover by a whopping 41.4% to $705.8 million, and ranked sixth.
The outlook for centres is less rosy, with the latest consumer confidence data indicating that consumers are closing their wallets.
