Taking a bite out of Apple

Computer giant Apple is being sued for allegedly infringing on a patent for web browsing technology.

EMG Technology has filed a lawsuit over Apple’s software on its iPhone that allows web pages to shrink in size to fit smaller screens. The company claims it infringes on a patent it was awarded on 21 October.

Stanley Gibson, partner at law firm Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Marmaro, told itnews.com.au the claim also covers software used for zooming and scrolling on pages.

“Web sites are just beginning to develop their mobile sister sites for fast and easy navigation. For example, to access NBC on a computer the URL is nbc.com. For the mobile site on the iPhone, the URL would be m.nbc.com,” Gibson says. “The… patent covers the simplified interface of reformatted mobile content to provide optimum viewing and navigation with single touches on a small screen.”
