PC component manufacturers are reportedly concerned about lukewarm interest in Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows 8 operating system, amidst reports chipmaker AMD is planning to announce it is cutting its global workforce by 20% to 30%.
With Microsoft set to launch Windows 8 on October 26, Tom’s Hardware reports that sources in several major component makers are concerned about potentially low demand for PCs when the new operating system launches, with demand not expected to pick up until at least the first quarter of 2013.
According to AllThingsD, Intel-rival AMD is expected to announce plans to cut its global workforce of 11,100 by around 20% to 30%, with between 2,200 and 3,300 jobs expected to be cut.
Sources claim engineering and sales staff are expected to bear the brunt of the job losses.
