MY BEST TECH: Andy Purvis

Andy Purvis is the general manager of Acronis in Australia and New Zealand, a company dedicated to offering digital security and backup solutions. It’s a tough gig working with data technology, and a busy one. But Purvis says his favourite piece of tech is something that helps him during his leisure time – a data logger that sticks to his motorcycle.

“As a self-confessed petrol head my hobbies and interests tend to be pretty focused around playing with things that have engines, mounted on two wheels or four.”

“My technology of choice is from a company called Race Technology. I purchased my unit a few years ago for under a thousand dollars and for that I get a unit about the size of a cigarette pack that mounts neatly under the dash of my race/track day car or motorcycle.”

“The great thing is that because it uses GPS technology coupled with some very clever software and g-sensors, all that is required to get up and running is a 12 volt power source and within a few minutes you have a tool that can help you analyse and improve pretty much every aspect of your driving performance.”

“Download to a laptop and you can draw track maps showing lap and split times, acceleration, g-forces, maximum and minimum speeds as well as predictive analytics that will tell you what your best theoretical lap time could be to how fast you can go through any given corner before the tyres will break traction.”
