LG confirms Google Nexus 5, Firefox OS and curved smartphones in October and November

South Korean electronics giant LG has confirmed a range of new smartphones will be unveiled in October and November, including a curved screen device, a Firefox OS smartphone and the Google Nexus 5.

According to a Korea IT News report, LG chief executive Koo Bon-joon confirms a flexible display phone and a phone running Mozilla’s Firefox OS smartphone platform will be unveiled next month.

Where Samsung’s Galaxy Round, unveiled earlier this month, features glass that curved from left-to-right, LG’s curved device will feature a bend from top to bottom.

Earlier this month, LG chemicals and batteries subsidiary LG Chem has revealed that, since July, the company has been mass-producing curved batteries at its plant in Nanjing, China.

The curved battery is designed to power smartphones and other portable devices using a curved display screen, and came just one day after the company announced it is putting flexible screens into mass production.

Meanwhile, back in February, Mozilla announced LG had signed on to build devices running Firefox OS.

Aside from LG, a number of device makers, including Huawei, ZTE, Sony and Alcatel, had all signed on to build Firefox OS devices.

While LG is targeting its Firefox OS smartphone at emerging markets in Central and South America through carrier Telefonica, both Optus and Telstra have expressed support for the new low-cost platform.

The Korea IT News report also confirms Google Nexus 5, a joint project of Google and LG, will be unveiled this month.

Google has a long history of unveiling new versions of Android alongside its flagship Nexus devices, and it is likely Google will unveil the next version – 4.4 KitKat – at the same time as the Nexus 5.

As was the case with Nexus 4, the new smartphone is likely to be similar in design to LG’s flagship smartphone, which is currently the LG G2.

The LG G2 features a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor running at 2.26GHz, a processor more powerful than Samsung Galaxy S4’s quad-core 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon Series 600 processor.
