Intel is trying to convince Apple to abandon ARM CPUs in the iPad and iPhone in favour of its x86-based Medfield CPUs, according to new reports.
Forbes is reporting that Intel intends to use its manufacturing scale and more advanced manufacturing processes to create mobile processors that Apple and its competitors “can’t ignore”.
In 2005, Apple switched the Mac desktop platform from IBM’s PowerPC CPUs to Intel’s x86 processors, however its iOS devices (including the iPhone and iPad) currently use ARM processors fabricated by Samsung.
Apple would be a significant step closer to merging the iOS platform it uses for its mobile devices (including iPhone and iPad) with its Mac OSX platform if both platforms used similar processors.
Last month, Intel introduced the first smartphones that use its x86-based mobile Medfield CPUs and announced that Lenovo and Motorola Mobility had signed on to use its processors.
