Google looking at opening its own stores

Google is rumoured to be strongly considering opening its own retail stores by the end of the year, mirroring similar efforts by Apple, Microsoft, Samsung and Sony.

9 to 5 Google reports an “extremely reliable source” at the company is claiming the search and mobile giant is currently aiming to open its first US stores in major metropolitan areas during 2013, ahead of the holiday season.

The stores will focus on selling the company’s Nexus tablets and smartphones, along with forthcoming products such as the company’s planned Google Glass augmented reality glasses.

The source claims the release of Google Glass is a major motivating factor behind the decision.

Google currently operates ‘store within a store’ booths at several major US and UK electronics store chains, with the flagship stores likely to be an extension of its existing retail offering.
