French President Francois Hollande has pledged €17 billion ($A21.8b) over 10 years in order to rollout a French version of Australia’s National Broadband Network.
According to Tech Week Europe, the French Digital Ambition (Ambition Numerique) plan will see 50% of the nation gain access to superfast broadband by the end of Hollande’s current term, in 2017.
It is unclear at this stage to what degree fibre to the node (FTTN) or fibre to the home (FTTH) will be used in the plan.
The project will be funded in three tranches, with private operators covering the cost of the rollout in densely-populated areas, while the government will subsidise the rollout in rural areas.
The news comes amidst mounting controversy over the rollout of the Australian NBN.
