Apple and Samsung capture 103% of mobile profits in 2012 – no, that’s not a typo

Apple and Samsung have managed an unlikely statistical feat, capturing 103% of all mobile phone industry profits in 2012, according to a new report.

The Canaccord Genuity figures, published by Apple Insider, show that the combined profits of Samsung and Apple were greater than the total of all mobile manufacturers minus all their losses.

The startling figure came about because operating losses at Google’s Motorola division, Sony Mobile and Nokia were bigger than the profits of the only other major manufacturer to report a profit in 2012, in HTC.

According to the report, Apple retains its title as the most profitable mobile manufacturer with 69% of all profits, followed by Samsung on 34%, HTC on 1%, BlackBerry and LG breaking even, and losses across the rest of the industry.
