KDE 4.8 released, tablet computer support and power management improved

KDE version 4.8 has been released, with improved support for touch interface devices such as tablet computers, and adaptive power management.

Other key features in the new release include more scalable file management, a new display engine for the Dolphin web browser, elevation profiles in Marble maps, and improved scrolling in the Gwenview image viewer.

KDE, along with GNOME, are the two most popular open source front-ends for computers and servers running Linux. KDE is made up of a desktop environment (Plasma), apps including the Dolphin web browser and a map application called Marble (KDE Applications), as well as the underlying toolkits and databases they run on (KDE Platform).

KDE 4.8 is available as a free download through most popular Linux Distributions, while Nokia N9 and N950 users will be the first to receive the new mobile Marble Touch map application.
