Research in Motion have announced that they will not ship any new phone models until the end of 2012 in news that will fuel speculation about the futures of joint CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie.
According to reports, independent directors at the company are reportedly meeting to discuss the pair’s future. Reuters is reporting that Barbara Stymiest, currently an independent member of RIM’s board, is currently the leading candidate for the position of CEO.
The Blackberry maker has widely been criticised in recent years for failing to capitalise on the growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers, losing market share to both Apple and Android.
The situation has been made worse with the announcement today that RIM will not ship any new models until the end of 2012, prompting doubts about the viability of its QNX technology.
The news follows a recent revelation that Microsoft and Yahoo have considered a joint takeover of RIM last year.
