RIM testing NFC in Spain

Spanish telco Telefonica Digital has announced it is working with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion on a new NFC system for smartphones.

The program will see 350 employees use BlackBerry phones that come with a wallet application that can be used to purchase goods from retailers.

“We have chosen the BlackBerry solution for this pilot because of the security that the platform brings,” Telefónica Digital chief operating officer Julio Linares said in a statement.

“RIM’s participation has been important for this pilot project, and we are now planning to extend the project to more and more Telefónica employees around the world.”

The move comes as Google has already released its own Wallet application, with users able to purchase items using contactless technology.
