The new iOS 5 software contains a reference to what may be a new version of the Apple TV set top box, according to a new post on 9to5Mac.
The post states that inside the OS 5 file system, there is a reference to something called “AppleTV3.1”, and notes the current version of AppleTV is called AppleTV 2.1.
The blog mentions that any update could feature an upgrade to the Apple TV’s internal components. However, it also notes that some other products which have had code included in previous software packages have never been developed.
The Apple TV was given an update last year, with Apple shrinking the device, removing storage and adding a capability to rent television shows. However, that feature was later taken away.
