Qantas trials iPad 2 for inflight entertainment

Qantas has begun trialing the iPad 2 as the company’s in-flight entertainment system, while airplane production company Boeing has promised Google that it will integrate the Android operating system into their new planes.

The iPads in questions will be locked to a single app, called “Q Streaming”, which will stream movies and music direct to the device via Wi-Fi, according to a report from Australian Business Traveller.

This comes alongside Boeing’s announcement that it has chosen Android to provide movie, music and other airline-specific apps for the entertainment systems of their new 787 Dreamliners.

The Android-driven system will be operated by touchscreen, and it is rumoured that business and first class passengers will have devices with prototypes for “gesturing”, allowing remote operation of the devices if they are too far away.
