Tech giant Apple has purchased the iCloud.com domain in a transaction worth $US4.5 million, according to reports in MacRumours and the Wall Street Journal.
According to various sources, Apple has purchased the domain in order to integrate a number of its cloud-based products for the Mac and MobileMe platforms – but also in preparation for the release of its music locker service.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple did indeed purchase the domain, although could not confirm whether the previously rumoured $US4.5 million price tag was accurate.
But TechCrunch has added some fuel to the fire, saying that an investigation into the latest developer build of OS X has found there are references to a service called “castle”, along with a piece of text saying “upgrade from MobileMe to Castle”.
Such a reference could be alluding to Apple’s new cloud service, which many believe will be unveiled at next month’s WWDC.
