Apple to extend AirPlay service

Tech giant Apple may be about to extend the use of its AirPlay service, which allows apps to stream video and audio content from one iOS device to another.

According to Bloomberg, Apple would license the AirPlay technology to manufacturers which would allow users to watch films and TV shows by switching from other devices. Currently, AirPlay is only licensed for audio.

The system works by having users start streaming audio or video and then pressing an “AirPlay” button, which automatically switches the stream to a device on that user’s WiFi network.

The change would allow users to take advantage of AirPlay for a television that isn’t connected to an Apple TV device, with the report suggesting Apple believes it may increase demand for its own services.
