Tech giants criticise internet filter

Some of the world’s largest tech giants have criticised the Government’s plans for an internet filter, with some security experts saying that a voluntary program would be more desirable.

As reported by Fairfax, Facebook chief privacy advisor Mozelle Thompson told the joint select committee on cyber safety that, “‘I would hate for the public to get the wrong impression that there is a quick technological solution for inappropriate content, because there isn’t”.

The Government has shelved plans for the filter until it completes a review of the classification system, but has consistently said it intends to introduce the filter.

”Our view is that that decision was made very quickly and that we believe that it would be good to see the possibility of a voluntary program explored,” Ninemsn’s Jennifer Duxbury said in response to a question about the filter.

The Government has continued to say the filter is only one part of a comprehensive strategy.
