Google Apps adds new verification procedure

Internet giant Google has added a new layer of security to its Google Apps platform that requires users to login with an additional password that is sent via SMS to a mobile phone.

ZDNet has reported the company will launch the new service for Android-based phones and BlackBerry gadgets first, and then will roll it out to iPhone users later on.

“The idea for the new feature came about when Google engineers said, ‘what’s the single thing we can do to improve the security for our users the most?'” security product manager Travis McCoy told the site.

The report states Google will allow administrators for the Google Apps Premier, Education and Government Editions. Standard Edition customers will also be able to access the feature eventually.
