Blackberry manufacturer RIM has unveiled BlackBerry Protect, a free service that allows users to back up, restore and remotely wipe data from their Blackberry device via the internet.
BlackBerry Protect will back up data on its first use and can be programmed to automatically back up at daily, weekly or monthly intervals.
The service can back up contacts, calendars, text messages, memos, tasks and browser bookmarks. The application also allows people to locate a lost device on a map using GPS and set off a loud ring to locate it nearby.
Through an online portal, users can log in and remotely display a ‘lost and found’ message, lock the phone or change the password.
BlackBerry Protect can even wipe all content on the device remotely if the phone isn’t found, including any content on the memory card. The data can then be restored to a new or replacement Blackberry.
The service will be free, in multiple languages and is set for release later in the year.
