Twitter launches official app for Android

Social networking service Twitter has launched its official mobile application for the Android operating system, following its acquisition of the company behind the Tweetie iPhone app.

The app allows users to share links, photographs and tweets with a user’s followers, with a number of special features including a Twitter timeline and location-sharing.

Tweets are able to be accessed through user’s phonebook, on Google Talk or any Android application using the QuickContact bar.

“When apps work well with each other, sharing becomes as second nature on machines as it does in person. The Android platform is really good at that, and we’ve worked with the Android team to make it super easy to share what’s happening. Today we are excited to announce that Twitter for Android is available in Android Market,” the company said on its official blog.

Twitter has been ramping up its activity in the mobile scene. Last month it acquired the Tweetie iPhone app, and said the developer behind the project would join the company’s mobile team to work on new projects.
