FCC hints at free wireless

The Federal Communications Commission in the US has tabled its National Broadband Plan, including hints of a free wireless service for American residents.

It comes as the National Broadband Network in Australia is underway, with some analysts criticising the Government for not including a wireless component.

The report states that Congress will be requested to “consider use of spectrum for a free or very low cost wireless broadband service”.

The comment, which did come with further details, has caused analysts to question where such a network might be based and how it would work. However, Information Week has reported telco T-Mobile as being against the network, saying such a service would interfere with its $US4 billion AWS network.
