YouTube has now introduced a new feature that will allows users to engage with news organisations by uploading videos to be used on professional bulletins and blogs.
The introduction of YouTube Direct comes as news organisations are increasingly using footage taken by “citizen journalists” on mobile phone cameras for updates on major developments, such as the bombings in Mumbai or the recent earthquakes in the Pacific.
YouTube Direct will also allow news organisations to send out requests for certain videos, which users can then take and upload themselves. Organisations can then contact the YouTube user for their footage.
“News organisations always want to verify the content they use,” Steve Grove, head of news and politics at YouTube said in a blog post. “It’s an incentive to upload great video, because of the recognition you’ll get from legitimate news organisations.”
The Huffington Post, Politico and the San Francisco Chronicle are now testing the service.
