Apple given leave to block Palm

The USB Implementers Forum has ruled that Apple can block rival handset manufacturer Palm from allowing its “Pre” device to sync with iTunes software.

The governing body wrote letters to both companies in which it said further use of iTunes by Palm’s devices would violate Apple’s policies.

“We engaged with the USB-IF because we believe consumers should have freedom and choice in how and where they use the non-rights managed media they already own,” a Palm spokesperson said in a statement. “We are reviewing the letter from the USB-IF and will respond as appropriate.”

The development is the latest in the war between Palm and Apple. When Palm’s Pre device hit shelves earlier this year, a large amount of marketing emphasised the ability to “sync” media files with iTunes software. However, many users became frustrated when Apple blocked the device from use with the iTunes software.
