New security system scans finger veins

Sony has created an identification systems technology that scans finger veins to allow access to personal devices such as mobiles and computers. The technology, which originated from a Japanese university thesis in 1992, was first developed by Hitachi in 2007 for its USB Finger Vein Biometric Scanner.

But Sony says it will use its Mofiria vein scanning technology in mobile devices and gateway security systems, as well as personal computers. The scanner will use a “unique method” of detecting finger veins to protect private data, the company says.

“The vein pattern is quickly and accurately extracted from the captured finger vein image without a fixed finger position, as the position of a placed finger is automatically and simultaneously corrected,” it . <
