Apple’s iPhone 5s outsold Samsung’s Galaxy S5 across 35 key markets during May, according to market research figures from Counterpoint.
The figures show the eight-month-old iPhone claimed the top spot, beating out the second-placed Galaxy S5, despite the fact the Samsung flagship only launched in markets such as Australia in April.
Other Samsung devices appearing in the top 10 devices included the Galaxy S4 (third), Galaxy Note 3 (fourth), Galaxy S4 mini (eighth) and the Galaxy Grand 2 (10th). Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone 5c took out fifth spot, while the iPhone 4s claimed sixth.
The only smartphones not from either Samsung or Apple to appear in the top 10 were the Mi3 and Hongmi Redrice smartphones from emerging Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi. Meanwhile, Sony’s Xperia Z1, Motorola’s Moto G and LG’s G2 made the top 20.
The news comes as a further blow to the South Korean electronics giant, which recently revealed its operating income fell around 24% in the June quarter to 7.2 trillion won ($A7.1 billion).
While Samsung remains the world’s largest mobile phone maker by volume, the news suggests its most recent flagship smartphone is struggling to gain traction in the market.
