Apple has increased its market share in Australia to 40.4% in the October quarter off the back of the iPhone 6 launch, but Android still dominates with 50.8% of the market, according to new Kantar WorldPanel figures.
The figures show Apple’s Australian smartphone market share grew from 35% for the same quarter a year earlier, while the market share for Google Android shrank from 54.9% and Windows remained flat on 7.3%.
Internationally, the bad news for Apple is the release barely shifted its market share in China, which moved from 15.5% to 15.7%, while its share collapsed in its largest non-English speaking market, Japan, where it’s down to 48% from 61.1% a year earlier.
Android is ahead of Apple in both markets, growing from 78.1% to 82.9% in China and from 36.2% to 48.1% in Japan in the face of the iPhone 6 launch.
In other markets, the patterns were similar to Australia. Apple logged year-over-year market share growth in Germany (13.8% to 16.9%), the UK (29.1% to 39.5%), France (15.9% to 19.6%), Italy (10.1% to 13.5%), the US (40.8% to 41.5%), and Spain (4.5% to 6.8%).
However, Android remains ahead in Germany (74.9%), the UK (52.3%), France (69%), Italy (70.2%), the US (53.8%) and Spain (88.2%).
