Payment systems have been evolving rapidly over the past year, with several new services launching in Australia within the last month alone.
Kounta, a cloud-based mobile point of sale system, takes the payment system evolution beyond the counter.
Founder Nick Cloete told StartupSmart he developed the idea for Kounta while he was working in a legacy point-of-sale business.
“I realised that the technology available wasn’t able to provide the type of service that merchants and customers needed to have in today’s online and connected world,” he says.
The software works on all tablets, computers and existing legacy equipment.
“As it’s cloud-based, it employs the same technologies like mobile payments, order, loyalty and e-commerce and cloud accounting,” Cloete says.
Kounta announced this week it can even take the sales relationship home with the customer, via a new push-marketing capacity via a partnership with PayPal Mobile and online ordering app Beat the Q.
As of this week, Kounta clients will be able to send marketing emails and promotions to their customers.
Customers will be able to use the PayPal app to find stores around them, check-in and pay for items on their mobile phone. They can also earn loyalty points and rewards.
“We wanted to create interaction between merchants and customers rather than just a transaction at the counter. It’s about relationships, not just selling people things,” Cloete says.
“It’s extends the point of sale from the counter to anywhere in the store so that staff can engage a better customer service experience to customer.”
