I loved reading Oliver Milman’s story on the top 10 offices in the world, although I was of course disappointed that the salubrious offices of Taskmaster Enterprises didn’t make the list.
Actually, I am not all that surprised. Other than my personal office, which features rich mahogany, leather-bound books, a private bathroom and a parent’s retreat, we’ve got pretty plain digs.
In fact, I often hear the workers muttering something about me being a “slumlord”. Ungrateful, aren’t they?
Seriously though, while you might look on with envy and the cool slides, designer furniture, running tracks and fake grass in some of these offices, making an improvement to your workspace is much easier than this.
Pick a group of staff from different levels and areas of the business and ask what would make the office a better place. Brainstorm some ideas, pick a winner and implement it.
Typically, it won’t be that difficult or expensive.
Your staff might want a room to eat lunch in, so they aren’t stuck at their desks all day. Could you clear out an area and put in some furniture to make this happen?
Or they might be longing for a water cooler. Or a bigger fridge. Or more whiteboards.
It’s not necessary to conduct a full makeover. Solving your people’s problems will be just as effective.
