NSW Transport initiative calls for app developers to help improve public transport for those with a disability

The NSW government is calling on leading digital experts to take part in an event designed to create a series of apps that will meet the needs of people with impairment or disability using the NSW public transport system.

Real-time apps have already been developed for train and bus customers, and they are changing the way people are using public transport.

“We’re hoping this event will capture the best ideas from the country’s top app developers and entrepreneurs that will change the way customers with disability in this state access and use their real-time public transport information,” a Transport for NSW spokesman said.

“Customers with vision or hearing impairments or mobility, physical or cognitive disabilities have told us directly that specific, tailored apps could make it easier for them to use the public transport system.

“We have listened to their concerns, which is why we are getting on with the job of tackling this problem.

“Planning a journey, knowing that our stop is coming up next or even knowing which side of the train to alight from are tasks that most of us take for granted,” the spokesman said.

“But for customers with disability or impairment it can be a huge cause of anxiety.

“This is all about innovation and coming up with a product that will provide customers with disability high quality information like they’ve never experienced before, so they can plan their journey with ample time and with ease and comfort.

“Accessibility apps alongside wayfinding and on-board and station announcements will also reduce safety risks for people with disability by providing improved navigational tools and reliable transport information,” the spokesman said.

It also contributes to the NSW government’s Disability Action Plan which is to ensure compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act to provide better customer support and information services for commuters with a disability.

Selected app proposals will receive seed funding, ongoing access to real time transport data as well as promotion of their product by Transport for NSW.
