Ignition Labs fires up for health and medical tech start-ups

Start-up accelerator Ignition Labs is seeking five health and medical technology start-ups for its 2013 development program with the aim of turning early stage ideas into fundable businesses.

Under the program the five successful applicants will receive $25,000 in seed capital with the possibility of further funding, mentor coaching and work space in the ATP Innovations incubator in Sydney.

“Health is an area that strongly impacts lives,” Ignition Labs co-founder Ben Wright says in a statement. “We’re in this to create positive health outcomes and build sustainable, successful technology businesses.”

The statement says Ignition Labs executives had pinpointed the health and medical technology sector as a “hot spot” for disruptive innovation.

It says convergence across the healthcare, life sciences, engineering, information technology and telecommunication industries is driving a new wave of emerging health technologies.

“Clinicians, engineers and scientists are leveraging technological advancements like microelectronics, low-power sensors, wireless networks, cloud computing, new materials and advanced manufacturing to transform the way in which healthcare is delivered and improve patients’ outcomes,” Wright says.
