Hi Ms Manners,
I read your answers each week and send the articles around the office because lots of people here need to learn these lessons. I wanted to know why you think it’s important to follow the rules of etiquette?
Billy
Etiquette can sometimes be seen by the younger generation as old-fashioned or out of date but let me promise this to you – the older generation, the people you are trying to impress, do not feel this way.
Senior management, mentors, other colleagues and of course clients – these are the people you are trying to sell yourself to. The people you are trying to do business with expect proper manners and behaviour. It will form their opinion of you.
I can say that I have seen people in meetings lose clients because they didn’t drink coffee correctly. Seriously.
Etiquette is not telling you how to live your life. It does not mean that you will never again be able to lick your coffee stirring spoon or dunk bread into soup.
When you are at home or dining with close friends or family casually then you can act whatever way you wish.
Etiquette does not have to just be a way of life. Knowing etiquette simply means that you know what is appropriate behaviour in appropriate times. We may not think it’s important to use but your client or prospective investor will.
That is what etiquette is all about!
Enjoy your new confidence and the game of etiquette.
Kind Regards,
Ms. Manners
