Take a Melbourne Cup tip

TaskmasterThe Melbourne Cup may be run and won by the time you read this, but I’d like to share a little tip that I’ve learned from years of following the sport of kings.

For those of you not familiar with racing, there are lots of different types of horses.

There are sprinters, which are good over shorter distances. There are milers, who are great running in middle distance events. And there are stayers, who race over longer trips and have plenty of stamina.

The key to winning races isn’t always having the most talented horse – the key is placing them in the right races so they can demonstrate their ability.

At risk of comparing your staff with animals, a similar approach is needed. It is a major responsibility of any employer to ensure staff are in their right roles.

You don’t want a bright and bubbly people person hidden away in your back office with no contact with customers.

Similarly, you don’t want a process-driven perfectionist stalling sales when they would be perfect in a more administrative role.

Horses for courses is the crucial message here.
