All in the glass

Hi Ms Manners,

Last week you wrote about picking wine when dining and I heard that there is a right and wrong way to hold the wine glass, is this true?

Yes, last week I did go over some guidelines for picking your wine and I also confirmed that my role here is to help you to look good and professional. Keeping in the spirit of helping you look proper I can tell you all about holding the glass correctly.

These rules actually have a purpose for the betterment of the wine.

Always hold white wine and Champagne by the stem of the glass just with your fingers – this will make sure your hand doesn’t warm up the delicious liquid. Warming can alter the taste.

Red wine is a little bit more flexible and welcomes being held at the bottom of the bowl of the glass, at the top of the stem. The warmth from your natural body heat can help to release the wine’s flavours.

So at least you know next time when someone suggests that you are a little tipsy because you are holding onto your red wine glass for dear life you can say you are merely releasing its natural aromas.

Enjoy your new confidence and the game of etiquette.

Kind Regards,

Ms. Manners
