Water boxed, not bottled, benefits environment

Start-up Idea- Boxed WaterBottled water may soon be a thing of the past, with the rise of cartons as an eco-friendly alternative. Milk, juice and wine all come in cartons, so why shouldn’t water?

A US-based business, aptly named Boxed Water Is Better, has designed a carton made from harvested trees, making it far more environmentally friendly than plastic bottles.

In addition to being made from green materials, the cartons are shipped flat to filling facilities, saving money and energy. After consumers’ thirst is quenched, cartons can be broken down and recycled.

The company describes itself as “part sustainable water company, part art project, part philanthropic project and completely curious”.

It says: “About 76% of the container is made from a renewable resource – trees – that when harvested in a responsible, managed and ethical way, serve as an amazing renewable resource that benefits the environment even as it’s renewed.”

The company also donates 20% of its profits to support clean water and forest conservation organisations.

There is an opportunity to develop a similar concept here, as Australians are increasingly keen to recycle and reduce carbon footprints.

Boxed water would be particularly beneficial for organisations buying in bulk such as schools and the defense force.
